Intersecting families of discrete structures are typically trivial

چکیده
The study of intersecting structures is central to extremal combinatorics. A family of permutations F ⊂ Sn is t-intersecting if any two permutations in F agree on some t indices, and is trivial if all permutations in F agree on the same t indices. A k-uniform hypergraph is tintersecting if any two of its edges have t vertices in common, and trivial if all its edges share the same t vertices. The fundamental problem is to determine how large an intersecting family can be. Ellis, Friedgut and Pilpel proved that for n sufficiently large with respect to t, the largest t-intersecting families in Sn are the trivial ones. The classic Erdős–Ko–Rado theorem shows that the largest t-intersecting k-uniform hypergraphs are also trivial when n is large. We determine the typical structure of t-intersecting families, extending these results to show that almost all intersecting families are trivial. We also obtain sparse analogues of these extremal results, showing that they hold in random settings. Our proofs use the Bollobás set-pairs inequality to bound the number of maximal intersecting families, which can then be combined with known stability theorems. We also obtain similar results for vector spaces.

Non-trivial intersecting uniform sub-families of hereditary families
For a family F of sets, let μ(F) denote the size of a smallest set in F that is not a subset of any other set in F , and for any positive integer r, let F (r) denote the family of r-element sets in F . We say that a family A is of Hilton-Milner (HM ) type if for some A ∈ A, all sets in A\{A} have a common element x / ∈ A and intersect A. We show that if a hereditary family H is compressed and μ...
متن کاملOn t-intersecting families of signed sets and permutations
A family A of sets is said to be t-intersecting if any two sets in A contain at least t common elements. A t-intersecting family is said to be trivial if there are at least t elements common to all its sets. Let X be an r-set {x1, ..., xr}. For k ≥ 2, we de ne SX,k and S∗ X,k to be the families of k-signed r-sets given by SX,k := {{(x1, a1), ..., (xr, ar)} : a1, ..., ar are elements of {1, ...,...
متن کاملThe Typical Structure of Intersecting Families
When t = 1, we simply say that the family is intersecting. Consider the following example. Fix a t-set, say I ⊆ [n], and values {xi : i ∈ I}. If for every σ ∈ F and i ∈ I σ(i) = xi, then F is clearly t-intersecting. Furthermore, we say that F is a trivial t-intersecting family of permutations. Note that the size of this family is at most (n − t)!. Ellis, Friedgut, and Pilpel [5] show that for n...

For a natural number m, let m =11,2, . . ., m} . An intersecting family on m is a set A of sets such that U A g m and any two members of A have non-empty intersection . We let J_ be the set of all maximal intersecting families on m . We are concerned with estimating JJ . J . In Section 2 we obtain a lower bound by elementary counting methods . In Section 3 we obtain an upper bound using a resul...
متن کاملIntersecting designs from linear programming and graphs of diameter two
We investigate l-designs (regular intersecting families) and graphs of diameter 2. The optimal configurations are either projective planes or design-like structures closely related to finite geometries. The new results presented here are corollaries of a recent improvement about uniform hypergraphs with maximal fractional matchings. We propose several open problems.
